A. Accent and Intonation of Japanese
1、 The nature of Japanese’s accent
The nature of pronunciation of the Japanese word is "the high-low accent form", which is used by voice to identify meaning. Therefore, there is "accent core," in Japanese word and occurs intonation in the sentence formed by word + word + word ---.
2、 The types of Japanese’s accent
Japanese accent depending on whether or not the accent core can be divided into Flat type(平板式)and Wavy type(起伏式). That is, words may be or may not be accented.
(一)、 Flat type(unaccented type)
unaccented form(平板型)-The first syllable is pronounced by low voice and all the other syllables are pronounced by high voice. It is generally marked as 0 or unmarked in dictionary.
(二)、Wavy type(accented type)
(1)、Pitch of the first syllable form(頭高型(あたまだかかた)) –The first syllable is pronounced by high voice, and all the other syllable are pronounced by low voice. It is marked as 1 in dictionary.
(2)、Pitch of the middle syllable form(中高型(なかだかかた)) –When there is accent core in multisyllabic words, the second or any subsequent syllable is pronounced by high voice, that is, if the second syllable has accent core, it is pronounced by high voice and all the other syllables are pronounced by low voice;If the third syllable has accent, the second and third syllables are pronounced by high voice, and all the other syllables are pronounced by low voice. It is generally marked as 2, 3 0r 4 and so on in dictionary.
(3)、Pitch of the last syllable form(尾高型(おだかかた))-If it has no particle, the same as unaccented form, the first syllable is pronounced by low voice, and all the other syllables are pronounced by high voice. If it has five syllables. It is marked as 5 in dictionary.
